Comments
Jean-Baptiste Filose was the son of a French soldier who had gained an appointment in the army of the Scindias. Jean-Baptiste followed in his father\'s footsteps and eventually became commander in chief of the Scindia army. He helped expand the territory under Gwalior rule in a large area to the southwest of the city, between the rivers Chambal and Betwa. His career and coinage are studied in detail by Shailendra Bhandare in an article entitled \"Making the most in \'Troubled Times\': Jean-Baptiste Filose and his Coinage,\" JONS 198 (Winter 2009), pp. 16-38. The coins are very rare and widely misunderstood. KM does not list this type. On the coin, Filose has his name inscribed in place of the mint name. Bhandare thinks the coin may have been struck in Sabalgarh. Nobody knows for sure what the regnal year dates on these coins mean. They may refer to the regnal years of Daulat Rao Scindia, with 34 being the last year, 1827.
