Krishnavarman II

Coins

Krishnavarman II was a ruler of the Kadamba dynasty’s southern Triparvata branch, which governed parts of present-day Karnataka after the original kingdom was divided by Kakusthavarma around 455 CE. His reign is dated approximately from 516 to 540 CE. He was the son of Simhavarma and succeeded to the throne of the Triparvata branch. Krishnavarman II is known for uniting the two Kadamba branches by raiding Banavasi and defeating Harivarma, the ruler of the northern Banavasi branch, around 530 CE. His reign marked the last phase of Kadamba independence before the kingdom was conquered by the Chalukyas of Badami circa 540 CE, after which the Kadambas became vassals under Chalukya suzerainty. Although his rule is somewhat obscure due to limited inscriptions, his actions were significant in briefly restoring Kadamba unity and power before their decline.
