This exceptional, large pilgrimage pattachitra depicts the Puri temple complex, sacred sites in the temple town and mythological themes and scenes. The Jagannatha temple complex dominates the diagram, showing the central shrine with Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra standing midway up a slender shikhara or tower. These types of paintings were produced for pilgrims to carry home for display and private worship of the Jagannatha trinity. It also created a visual aid to remembering and renewing the entire pilgrimage experience.
